Fall 2019: 36 Students Join Grad Programs

New grad students at fall 2019 picnic

As the 2019-20 academic year started at Iowa, the ranks of our graduate programs welcomed 27 MCS and 9 PhD students.

Overall, they hailed from Bangladesh, China, India, Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, Turkey, the USA, and Vietnam.

Our homestate of Iowa is well represented in the matriculating MCS class with students from Bode, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Hiawatha, Iowa City, Sioux City, and Sutherland.

Of the 27 MCS students, three belong to our Grinnell BA/MCS U2G program and four to our own MCS U2G program.

A special mention and welcome to Flannery Currin, Iowa Recruitment Fellow and Zach Amsler, recipient of the Joseph Barkmeier and Ann Tice Computer Science Scholarship for 2019-20.

The former award offers most accomplished new Ph.D. students a stipend supplement for up to five years and fellowship support  for up to four summer terms. The latter recognition supports strong performance as an undergraduate student and an indication of how much the department would value a student join our MCS program. Past recipient Q&A may be found here for fellowship and here for scholarship. We plan on "checking back" with this year's awardees in the Spring!

The department hosted a welcome picnic on August 22 in City Park; a few pictures follow.
