Professors Chipara and Shafiq receive NSF CAREER awards

Professors Octav Chipara and Zubair Shafiq have received NSF CAREER awards for their respective proposals:

"Software Adaptation and Synthesis Techniques for Internet of Things Systems" and "Quality of Experience and Network Management in the Encrypted Internet."

 

Octav Chipara proposes to integrate sensing, computation, and cloud-based intelligence to create adaptive IoT systems that can manage multidimensional performance tradeoffs. Because of the diversity across IoT hardware platforms and the broad range of environmental factors they are certain to encounter (e.g., fluctuations in the quality of wilreless channels, variable and asyncrhonous workloads, etc.), a system that can adapt its resource consumption to changing contexts without unduly sacrificing performance will be less brittle to changes in environmental factors. Professor Chipara's CAREER award proposes to produce the algorithmic and system advancements necessary for automating the configuration and synthesis of adaptation policies for IoT systems.

 


Zubair Shafiq proposes to investigate novel cooperative approaches for Quality of Experience (QoE) and network management in the encrypted Internet. To this end, Professor Shafiq's CAREER award focuses on the design and development of new and potentially transformative approaches to enable cooperation between content providers and network operators for QoE optimization and network management in the increasingly encrypted Internet. This work has two distinct branches; first, to investigate implicit cooperation between network operators and content providers through machine learning based traffic analysis of encrypted traffic, and, second, to investigate in-band protocols and out-of-band API frameworks to enable explicit information exchange between network operators and content providers.


These five-year projects have been awarded $499,309 and $500,000, respectively.
