Life of Pi

The Department of Cinematic Arts and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invite you to two events celebrating the achievements of 2017 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Alumni Fellow David Conley (BA 1990).

  • Public Screening of Life of Pi: Wednesday, October 18, 7:30 pm (Adler Journalism Building E105)
  • David Conley in Conversation with Associate Professor Paula Amad, Chair of the Department of Cinematic Arts: Friday, October 20, 3:00-4:30 pm (Visual Arts Building E125)

David Conley is the Executive Visual Effects Producer of Weta Digital, one of the world’s premier visual effects companies, founded by the director Peter Jackson.

He is at the forefront of world-leading innovations in digital effects technology that are behind the unique fantasy worlds of major globally popular and critically acclaimed films such as Life of PiWar for the Planet of the ApesThe BFGDisney’s Jungle BookPete’s DragonJurassic Park: 4Independence Day: 2Wonder WomanCloverfieldThe Hobbit 2 & 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean: 4.  

At the Friday event, Mr. Conley will be will be in conversation with the Chair of the Department of Cinematic Arts, Associate Professor Paula Amad, and recognized as a CLAS Alumni Fellow.


In addition to the ‘Public Talk/Conversation’ on Friday Oct 20, there will also be the following events with David:

Wednesday, October 18th | 11:30a – 12:20p, Career in Visual Effects: A Conversation and Q & A with David Conley | E105 Adler Journalism Building.

Topics to be covered:  career-related issues and the industry and economics of Visual Effects in contemporary cinema; role of the VFX Supervisor and Producer; role of the VFX team within the motion picture industry. (Cinematic Arts Head of Film and Video Production and Associate Professor Christopher Harris will host).

Thursday, October 19th | 9:30a – 10:45a, The Art of Visual Effects:  A Conversation and Q & A with David Conley | E126 Adler Journalism Building .

Topics to be covered: the VFX Pipeline; the artistry behind computer graphics.  (Film Studies Ph.D. Graduate Student Amos Stailey-Young will host)
