The 2025 REU: Computing for Health and Well-being was the fourth iteration of 10-week summer research program designed to introduce undergraduate students to the world of research. Each student joined a faculty mentor’s research group—often made up of faculty, graduate students, and other undergraduates—to contribute to interdisciplinary projects. Alongside their research, participants engaged in a Data Science Bootcamp, career development workshops, and community-building activities. The REU is a full-time experience that provides students with a stipend, housing, and meals, while also offering social events and excursions to ensure the summer was both productive and fun.

This year’s program brought together 11 undergraduate researchers, 10 faculty mentors, and support from graduate students and staff within UIowa CS and the CLC research group. Participants also connected with their peer REU cohort at Iowa State University (Iowa State University’s Virtual Reality Applications Center (VRAC) and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) program are the hosts for this program) at the UIowa & ISU REU Symposium, fostering collaboration and exchange across campuses. To cap off the summer, students presented their work at the Summer Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) on July 30.

We extend our sincere thanks to all the students, faculty, and staff who made the University of Iowa’s 2025 REU Computing for Health and Well-being such a success. Your dedication, curiosity, and collaboration created an engaging, enriching experience that not only advanced research but also strengthened our shared community.
