About me:
Hello! My name is Jamil Gafur, and I am a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Iowa, specializing in explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) and resource-efficient neural networks (i.e., Modular AI). My research aims to better understand machine learning techniques prioritizing performance and efficiency.
I am passionate about the intersection of Research Software Engineering, Machine Learning, and societal impact. I strive to create solutions that contribute positively to our communities and improve people’s lives. My current work involves investigating pruning techniques in neural networks to enhance computational efficiency while maintaining accuracy and robustness.
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with esteemed researchers and work on cutting-edge projects at institutions like Los Alamos National Lab and the National Renewable Energy Lab. My professional experience includes developing machine learning platforms for biological research and optimizing high-performance computing environments.
I am actively involved in the US Research Software Engineer Association and enjoy mentoring others, contributing to training resources, and fostering community engagement.
