Biography

Mackie is an academic advisor for the Computer Science and Statistics and Actuarial Science Departments. He earned his BA in English and MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He has taught university, community college, and high school classes, including seven years in English as a Second Language Programs at the University of Iowa. In 2019, he traveled to China to teach public speaking and art classes for Otterbein University at the Shanghai College of Printing and Publishing. More recently, he has taught ESL classes at Kirkwood Community College. 

Mackie strives to provide a welcoming and engaging experience to all of the students he advises. His goal is to provide clear communication and relevant information about each student’s academic program, its requirements and opportunities for personal and professional growth, and to address challenges in a proactive and positive manner. He is a good listener who enjoys working with students and colleagues from a variety of cultural and academic backgrounds. 

Mackie lives in Iowa City with his family. He enjoys reading, writing, and publishing contemporary poetry, as well as teaching letterpress printing classes at the Iowa City Press Cooperative.

In-Person: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - 8am-4pm
Virtual: Monday and Friday - 7:30am-3:30pm

Students can schedule advising appointments through MyUI / MAUI.
