Iowa Undergraduate Computer Science Consortium - Sat. October 8, 2022
The Iowa Undergraduate Computer Science Consortium (IUCSC) is an informal group of faculty members from Iowa colleges and universities. The purpose of the group is to promote communication among CS faculty and facilitate discussion of common problems and issues, as well as share experiences and accomplishments.
This year, it has been scheduled for Saturday October 8, 2022 in room 2520D UCC, located on the second floor of the University Capitol Center (a.k.a. Old Capitol Mall) on the University of Iowa main campus.

Dr. Tabak "Examples, guidance, and practice to improve our students' writing" Cornell College now requires that all academic departments help students become better writers. Leon Tabak will describe his efforts to meet this challenge in a course that mixes lessons that develop programming skills with lessons that develop writing skills. The course contains exercises that invite students to read and respond to prominent contributors to our field. There will be time for discussion: What kind of practice will help our students most? What should students of computer science read? |

Dr. Kleiman “K-12 STEM initiatives” ExploreU is an annual STEM summer program for middle school girls. I will talk about ExploreU and the activities we do (like Scratch programming). It has been running for 10 years and we now have alums who go to local colleges and study STEM. Discussion on what other K-12 activities are there. How do we become involved? |

Dr. Brodie “Computer Science Projects in Speech Therapy” Speech therapy is an area where undergraduate computer science students can do interesting and meaningful work. We describe projects undertaken at Simpson College in the last few years. |

Dr. Tumenbayar “Teaching cloud computing to students who have no experience” As cloud technologies continue to help organizations transform at a rapid pace, employees with the necessary cloud skills are in high demand. According to LinkedIn data, cloud computing is the number one hard skill companies need most. In my cloud computing course, I teach the most popular services in the AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud and prepare students to pursue industry-recognized certifications and in-demand jobs. |

Dr. Mitra “Participating in International Collegiate Programming Contest” The ICPC International Collegiate Programming Contest, known as the ICPC, is an annual multi-tiered competitive programming competition among the universities of the world. There are many benefits for students to participate in this contest. This talk is geared towards how faculty and students can participate in and prepare for this contest. |

The Consortium has met approximately once a year since its beginning in 1994.
