The Department of Computer Science extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual Prospective Student Visit Day on Friday, November 7. It was a pleasure to welcome so many talented and enthusiastic visitors interested in our MCS and PhD programs.

Throughout the day, prospective students had the opportunity to meet our world-class faculty, and hear presentations by University of Iowa CS Professors Katherine Kosaian, Naimul Hoque, Taylor Olson, and Weiran Wang on their current research. Whether it was algorithms and distributed computing to human-computer interaction, machine learning, and virtual reality—participants had a first-hand look at the vibrant research community that defines Computer Science at the University of Iowa.

A highlight of the event was the 11th Iowa Computer Science Graduate Research Symposium, where senior PhD students presented engaging talks showcasing their cutting-edge research, including:

  • Apoorv Ingle on "Overloading Reloaded: Making Ad-hoc Polymorphism Even Less Ad-hoc."
  • Chen Sun on "Closing Regulatory Gap: Reducing Information Fragmentation and Enabling Scalable Enforcement."
  • Joshua Sobel on "Distributed Sampling and Counting Algorithms."
  • Jamil Gafur on "What happens when you lobotomize a neural network?"

These presentations, designed for a broad computer science audience, offered an inspiring glimpse into the innovative work happening across our department. The symposium concluded with a thought-provoking keynote address from a Assistant Professor Mehrdad Moharrami on Recovering Planted Structures in Randomly Weighted Graphs, sparking lively discussion and new ideas.

We are proud of our current graduate students for their outstanding presentations and grateful to all who participated in making the day such a success. To our visiting students—thank you for your curiosity, questions, and energy. We hope the visit offered valuable insight into our programs and community, and we look forward to welcoming some of you back to Iowa as future members of our department!
