Interested in learning more about computer science, technology, and software in a fun and friendly environment?

ACM@UIOWA is the local student chapter of the International Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), one of the oldest and largest professional organizations in tech. We promote computing and technology in a fun and casual environment and serve as the premier Computer Science student organization at Iowa (of course, students of all majors are welcome to join!).

the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) will be hosting a mini HackerRank competition for all skill levels!

HackerRank is an online platform that helps programmers improve their problem-solving and data structures & algorithms (DSA) skills through coding challenges. Similar to LeetCode, it’s widely used for interview preparation, making it a great way to practice for technical interviews while also enhancing your ability to tackle real-world coding problems. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced coder, this is your chance to challenge yourself, have fun, and compete for prizes. Graduate students are also welcome!

The competition will have two divisions: Easy and Medium, with both individual and team prizes for each.

All you need to bring is a laptop, but we encourage participants to create a HackerRank account, sign up for their desired division ahead of time, and attempt the "Solve Me First" problem to get familiar with the platform. Most programming languages are supported, so you can code in the one you're most comfortable with! We will also allow for setup time before the contest commences.

Competition Details:

  • Two divisions:
    • Division 1 (Easy) – For those seeking to practice fundamental coding skills. (Sign up here)
    • Division 2 (Medium) – For more experienced programmers. (Sign up here)
  • Format:
    • Participants can compete individually or in a 2-person team.
    • Each division will have two winners: one for individual participants and one for teams.
    • Rankings are determined by score, and in case of a tie, the winner is decided by the total time taken for the last submission.
  • Graduate Student Participation:
    • Graduate students must compete individually in Division 2.
    • They will have a 25-minute time limit instead of the full 40 minutes.
