The John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center and University of Iowa Research Foundation recently announce the winners of the 2012 Iowa Centers for Enterprise Challenge. The Iowa Centers for Enterprise Challenge is a campus-wide business plan competition that is opened to all University of Iowa faculty, staff, and graduate students, as well as startups whose principle address is at the UI Research Park or Bedell Entrepreneurship Learning Laboratory (BELL).

Seventeen finalists were chosen to present their business plan in a formal competition last Friday out of 39 teams that entered the competition.  The 17 teams presented their business plan in front of a panel of judges, competing for a total of $56,500 in seed grants.

Congratulations to the following winners and everyone that entered this year’s competition!

  • 1st Place - $15,000: Tutor Universe (BELL), Thomas Hornbeck (MS Computer Science) & Hung Tran (PhD Computer Science)
  • 2nd Place - $10,000: Iowa Writers Online, Erik Habecker (Faculty, English) & Janet Hendrickson (Faculty, English)
  • 3rd Place - $5,000: IMIG Burn Wound Dressing, Adriane Downs (MBA) & Kenneth Khoo (MBA)
  • 3rd Place - $5,000: IMIG Foley Catheter, Riley Lind (MBA), Stephanie Tang (MBA), Heather Hoops (MD), Chaid Schwarz (MS Biomedical Engineering), Abram Carls (JD Law), Kristin Knudson (BSE Biomedical Engineering), Wendy Ramalingam (MD), & Zihan Zhu (BSE Biomedical Engineering)
  • 3rd Place - $5,000: {made} community, Justine Vavroch (MBA), Tiffany Ralston & Rachel Roewe
  • 3rd Place -$5,000: Mazira (BELL), Anith Mathai (MBA) & Ross Johnson (Faculty, Engineering)
  • 3rd Place - $5,000: Needle Analytics (BELL), Riley Gardam (BA Geography & Pre-law) & Jacob Langenfeld (BA English)
  • 3rd Place - $5,000: TranslaCare, Inc (BELL), Ryan Ries (BA Linguistics & BS Biology)
  • Runner up  - $1,500: Local to Local, Ben Clark (MBA)
