We are excited to announce that the University of Iowa Informatics graduate program (IGPI) has transitioned to be closely affiliated with the Department of Computer Science (CS), in a similar way to how the Applied Mathematical and Computational Sciences program works with the Departments of Mathematics. At the same time IGPI will remain an interdisciplinary program with the aim of having broad representation in its leadership.

A new set of policies and procedures guide the program, following recommendations of the department’s recent external review and strategic plan, as well as discussions with the Graduate College. The changes aim to increase administrative efficiency while retaining flexibility and better interfacing with the undergraduate Informatics program (BS; BA).

The changes to the program’s structure will affect students admitted after the Fall of 2021:

• The PhD program will no longer have subprograms but will instead have a curriculum consisting of a set of core courses complemented by courses selected by the student’s committee, adding greater flexibility;
• At the MS level, the options will align with those of the undergraduate Informatics degree: Geoinformatics, Health Informatics (including PharmD version), and Human-Computer Interaction (a new subprogram aligned with the most popular cognate for undergraduate Informatics students);
• A simplified generic Informatics Certificate will be offered.
