Informatics PhD student Rachel Fitzjerrells was recently awarded first place at the 71st Iowa Section of the American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) and Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research for her presentation entitled “Machine Learning Approach Identifies Dysbiotic Oral Communities in Multiple Sclerosis.”

PhD candidates Andrew Marmaduke (Computer Science - 6th year) and Han Bao (IGPI | Geoinformatics - 5th year) were awarded a Ballard and Seashore Dissertation Fellowship. Fellow doctorate students Kowsar Hossain (CS - 6th year) and Osama Khalid (CS - 5th year), and Ingroj Shrestha (CS - 6th year) have received Graduate College Post-Comprehensive Research Fellowships for Spring 2024.

Ibrahim Demir, an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Bijaya Adhikari, an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, won a $125,000 award from the National Science Foundation to contribute hydroinformatics and machine learning training to a cutting-edge initiative entitled "Inclusive Cyberinfrastructure and Machine Learning Training to Advance Water Science Research."

Dr. Rahul Singh joined us in Fall 2023 from San Francisco State University. He is also a professor (by affiliation) at the Center for Discovery and Innovation in Parasitic Diseases, University of California, San Diego. Dr. Singh brings to UIowaCS a $516,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for the research project entitled Designing Structure-Phenotype Query-Retrieval and Analysis Systems for Microscopy-Based Whole Organism Studies.

The project will develop a suite of compiler and runtime tools to simplify the implementation of sampling-based algorithms and improve their performance in computing and big data applications while enhancing their capacity to solve real-world problems at a large scale. In doing so, the project will provide solutions to limitations of sampling-based hardware without sacrificing the accuracy and efficiency of sampling strategies.
