IGPI Faculty Jun Wang Receives 2024 Discovery & Innovation Scholar of the Year Award

Jun Wang, James E. Ashton Professor and interim departmental executive officer in the CoE’s Dept. of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, is the 2024 Scholar of the Year. The award celebrates nationally recognized recent achievement in outstanding research, scholarship, and/or creative activities. Wang’s research centers on the development of novel remote sensing techniques to characterize aerosols and fires from space. He serves as the University of Iowa’s lead investigator on NASA’s TEMPO, Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring Pollution, which Time magazine named one of its best inventions of 2023.

Garrett Morris Reflects on POPL24 and his Distinguished Paper Award

Dr. Garrett Morris, an assistant professor and inaugural Emeriti-faculty scholar in the Department of Computer Science, received a Distinguished Paper award while attending the 51st AMC SIGPLAN Symposium on Principles of Programming Languages (POPL 2024). His research, titled “Soundly Handling Linearity”, proposes a novel approach to soundly combining linear types with multi-shot effect handlers.

The CLC performs research across programming languages, formal verification, and automated reasoning, and includes J. Alumna Daniela Rus one of "10 Underrated Women in AI to Watchout For"

"In a tech world where diversity is critical yet often overlooked, unsung women are enriching the AI field with innovations that promise a future where technology is as diverse as the society it serves. [...] Daniela L Rus is the director of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and holds the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Professorship in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. Rus’s contributions address challenges in machine learning such as data quality, bias, and adaptability of systems, alongside innovations in robotics like soft robotics, modular robots, and autonomous vehicle algorithms. She has developed technologies to assist the physically disabled."
