Several University of Iowa Computer Science students competed at HackUIowa '22 October 15 - 16, 2022, presented by UI Hydroinformatics Lab. Some solo or team efforts garnered awards. For instance, MCS student Nikhil Singh's project entitled "Data Oriented Design for Movie Review System" won “Best Solo Hack Award” and Mitchell Hermon (CS), Maneesh John (CS&E), Julian Wemmie (CS) Raymond Yang (CS) won “Best Sustainability App Award by ENGIE” for their "UIOWA Main Campus Energy Sustainability Dashboard"

University of Iowa computer scientist Juan Pablo Hourcade is assembling an interdisciplinary team of researchers to develop foundational ethical principles for conducting research with youth for extended reality (XR) technologies. “The goal of this project is to proactively examine the ethical considerations for youth up front with guidelines so that new technologies can be developed responsibly.”

"Dynamic Healthcare Embeddings for Improving Patient Care" by Hankyu Jang, Sulyun Lee (Informatics PhD '22), D. M. Hasibul Hasan, Philip M. Polgreen, Sriram V. Pemmaraju and Bijaya Adhikari won the runner up prize for the best student paper award at the 2022 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Network Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2022).

"Bijaya Adhikari said the public has concerns about AI. He said one concern is that AI will impact the quality of patient care, but he said it will not. He said another common concern about AI is that it will replace human labor and cause people to be laid off, but he also does not see this happening. He said AI will complement human expertise and inform healthcare providers of possible next steps in treatment."

Associate Prof. Octav Chipara and his co-authors* received a Test Of Time Award at SenSys2022; which recognizes paper that are at least 10 years old and have had long lasting impact on networked embedded sensing system science and engineering.

Jamil Gafur (3rd Year PhD Student) was awarded a GEM Employer Fellowship for the 2022-23 academic year. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)and the University of Iowa co-sponsor this fellowship. As part of this program Gafur interned at the NREL in Summer 2022. Jamil was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.

Rack Light and Wash Wiz shared first place and were both awarded $900 at Startup Games on Oct. 16 in the Paul W. Brechler Press Box at Kinnick Stadium. Ben Hammond, senior (economics and infomatics) was part of team "Wash Wiz" a service that creates a more efficient method to do laundry.
